Formigal: 143km of skiing across four valleys
The resort:
Formigal is located on the French Spanish border in the Western Pyrenees in the Huesca province of Spain. The resort stretches across four valleys – Tres Hombres- Sextas, Izas-Sarrios, Anayet and Portalet. It was purpose-built in 1950 and has had recent investment which has kept its status as a top-class resort.
Skiing in Formigal:
With 143km of slopes, skiers are spoilt for choice at Formigal. The majority of slopes are above the tree line and North facing, with many being long wide cruisers. A new expansion of the area has blue, red, and black runs that are around 2/3 km long and run into the Anayet valley. There is a nursery area containing 500m blue runs which are great for beginners to build confidence, as well as 3km black runs that are located above the beginner area for the more advanced skiers to tackle. The lift system is modern and has a high capacity, with some lofts being hands-free. This combines with the modern ski station to create a top-class resort. In addition to this, there are 2 snow parks and even a timed slalom course that records your run so you can watch yourself back later. For those who like off-piste skiing, there is a large amount of off-piste terrain available but only accessible with a guide.
For Schools Because:
The lifts up to the slopes are extremely accessible here as they are within walking distance from the resort, yet a ski bus is still available for those with lots of equipment. The resort itself is well known for having a friendly atmosphere and a relaxed resort which is ideal for a school trip. Formigal is one of the few resorts with an elevation difference of over 1000m making it perfect for groups who want to get some downhill skiing in on quality slopes.
Apres Ski:
Night skiing is available on Friday and Saturday nights for a spectacular evening activity. In the resort, there are 8 restaurants that all serve quality food including tapas, pizza, and classic Alpine food at the Gemsbock restaurant.
